This year’s two-day shootout (Jan. 16-17) at North Park University promises to once again be one of the state’s finest.
The Ronald "Chops" Billinger Memorial Shootout is in its fifth year and first with a new title named after the late Ronald “Chops Billinger, a local scout who helped kids particularly from the inner city find colleges. The Shootout is hosted by Von Steuben High School.
Located at NPU -- intersection of Kedzie and Foster on Chicago’s north side -- the action begins at 11 a.m. Sunday with Lane Tech vs. Prosser and ends with the last game of the day at 7:30 p.m.
The day’s first session (first three games) will feature the high-scoring Rob Eschmann of Northside Prep. Also, Curie will take on Niles West in a rematch of their exciting game at the Pontiac Holiday tournament.
The second session begins with Westinghouse vs. Rich Central. Westinghouse’s speedy guards are backed up by the city’s top post player, DeAndre Thomas. Rich Central is constantly improving as the season continues while they continue to develop chemistry with several transfers. Then host Von Steuben takes on Class A power North Lawndale with 6’7” senior Elvis Parks. The night’s finale pits a rematch of Hales Franciscan and Farragut. Hales will be without star Nate Minnoy, as he serves the second of his two-game suspension.
Monday’s games begin with upstart Foreman taking on Proviso West at noon. Gonzaga-bound Jeremy Pargo will go up against Freeport and its own star Willie Veasley in the day’s second game. The day’s finale features the height of Morgan Park against the quick guards of Thornwood.
Tickets are $5.00/adults and $2.00/students per session. An all-sessions pass is $8.00.
